Description
Many people use social bookmarking. It is always a good idea to put some "bookmarking shortcuts" inside your pages. Even though people often use special toolbars or other utilities — when they spot a familiar icon (such as del.icio.us icon ) it reminds them to bookmark the site they are visiting — if it is worth it.A very good idea is to add bookmarking icons to your side bar. So:
- open your "sidebar page" (by default it is nav:side, access it via http://your-site-name.wikidot.com/nav:side
- click on "edit"
- paste the code from below
Code
[[=]]
[[social del.icio.us,simpy,reddit,yahoomyweb,furl]]
[[/=]]

in my website http://bgd.wikidot.org I have the bookmarks in the side bar and they always show the title of the page, but nothing else… it doesnt take any text to put it as a description, but that's kinda fine for my needs.
anyway how can I add twitter and stumbleupon buttons? because I've seen that wikidot has the 2 icons in the bar on top of the websites. I think that means they should be supported but if I write the 2 names in the tag social they do not work. any idea on how to make them work?
thanks
Alberto
I code, do design, and project management for a living… so I'm providing this as additional assistance should someone take on to fix it.
The problem I initially mentioned with respect to the site description text picking up the Wikidot admin operations will only happen sometimes… having tested what is going on from multiple pages now (and getting different results), here is what is happening… the site description text that posts to FB is the first text block on the screen that is not in a heading level. If it doesn't find any (some of my screens don't have any), the FB link picks up the site admin instructions. What should happen in that instance is to pick up the Site Description from the Site Admin area not the general Wikidot admin/edit instructions.
And IMHO, the image to display for the site in FB should be the first image that it encounters that is not in the [[social]] tag (unless that is all that it finds, in which case display the FB image as it does today).
If that helps, great and you are welcome to email me too. If not, hopefully no harm, no foul.
I'd suggest you create a new bug report for this over at http://feedback.wikidot.com — after reading what you've posted up there, I agree that this needs to be fixed.

The purpose of a Facebook link from a wiki is to leverage this #1 social media platform to spread the word. It is Web 2.0 marketing at its best - the kind that startups can't afford even if traditional media worked any more.
And yet here we are on Wikidot on the 5 yard line. I love Wikidot. Don't get me wrong. I'm a Pro+ user and have built a business of creating sites for others on it and am earning real money with it.
But the sites I build for my customers are for John Q. Public to use. The general public will not struggle with technology and design is everything. If they hit a "Share on Facebook" button, they expect to see an image that makes sense for the site in the preview link, along with a description of the site that makes sense in the link window so that when they make their "Wall Post" that it makes sense to their "friends."
Michael, you and the other folks behind Wikidot are doing great work. The sites I build for my car dealer customers out-index their main sites in a week or two. Having this function de-bugged is important to me and would make a great example for your media relations on what Seth Godin calls using technology to facilitate "sneezing" (consumers doing your marketing for you).
When the social bookmarking button for Facebook is used, the "Post To Profile" window that comes up also has the Wikidot site admin/editor instructions as the default text to say about the page.
And if the social tag is placed in nav:side as indicated above, the link is http://www.site.com/nav:side …. again, not ideal… it should be the current page of the wiki.
Obviously neither reads very well nor does either link or description capture what the page is about. I logged out so that I was just an anonymous user and got the same effect.
Here is what Facebook picks up as the page being about no matter what the content of the page is… "Breakaway Honda in Greenville, SC: Side Panel Navigation
http://www.greenville-honda-civic-coupe.com/nav:side
Click here to toggle editing of individual sections of the page (if possible). Watch headings for an "edit" link when available."
Should probably pick up the page name or heading or some such, not the wikidot screen edit instructions.
And the image it picks up is the social bookmarking image. As a suggestion and if it is not a FB issue, the image that should be picked up is the first image after the [[social]] tag.
If the goal is to get users to spread the good word about the individual wiki… then this makes it just too hard for them… user confusion = abandonment
If I am missing something or someone has found how to do this, please advise for the rest of us who are less skilled.
I have noticed the same problem. I have no idea about the image part (and it offers you a choice anyway, so no big deal there…) — but the text cannot be edited and I often end up just posting a normal message and removing the 'link' part from the message altogether.

Many of us are using "Add This" on our sites. I just checked they don't support kwoff at this point, but they do provide a means to suggest new services to be added.

Here in Australia www.kwoff.com is a popular bookmarking/news sharing site. How could it become involved with this tool?
cheers,
Ruben FitzSimons
Never heard of it, and I'm an Aussie ;-)
I'll check it out now though…
